Points Test Breakdown

You need at least 65 points to be eligible, but competitive scores are typically 80-90+. Points come from:

  • Age: Maximum 30 points (ages 25-32)
  • English: Up to 20 points (Superior English = IELTS 8+ all bands)
  • Work experience: Up to 20 points overseas, additional for Australian experience
  • Education: Up to 20 points (PhD gets maximum)
  • Partner skills: Up to 10 points if your partner also qualifies
  • Other: NAATI, professional year, regional study, STEM qualification

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Check your occupation on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List)
  2. Get a positive skills assessment from the relevant authority (e.g., ACS for IT, Engineers Australia)
  3. Take IELTS/PTE and get required scores
  4. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect
  5. Wait for an invitation (higher points = faster invitation)
  6. Lodge your visa application within 60 days
